Here are some of the dead IT ideas you need to remove from your business practices

The IT world is, like any other business area, prone to corporate speak and other annoying organizational illnesses. Accordingly, if you’re going to provide the very best service for your organization and do it in the most efficient and effective way possible, you need to purge, from time to time. You need to drop some of those old clichés and ideas that you used to hold dear, and find new and better ways to do what you do. In essence, you need a paradigm shift – one that takes you away from old phrases and ideas like, well, “paradigm shift.”

•   On time and in budget. All too often, when someone says they delivered on time and in budget it means they delivered some portion of user requirements for the agreed-upon cost over a time longer than the original promised date, but which the user agreed to.

Just give everyone an iPad. It used to be BlackBerrys. This is the advice usually given to IT after some executive reads an article in Time magazine about how the device boosts productivity.

•   Usable right out of the box. The fact of the matter is that solutions with no customization mean that you have to adhere to someone else’s best practices.

•  Why does it cost so much? Technology isn’t cheap. The fact of the matter is that the solutions you provide cost money. Yet, you’ll face this obstacle frequently in dealing both inside and outside the IT function.

•    We’ve never seen anyone do it quite that way before. This is most often heard from a solutions provider brought in to fix a mess after a company tried to implement a new technology or product without external help.

•   Nobody ever got fired for buying from this vendor. Vendor loyalty can be an important part of an IT strategy. That said, vendor loyalty has put a great number of salespeople’s kids through college.

Some of these ideas are internal, some external. All of them will create significant problems for your company if you’re not willing to question them and if you’re not ready to combat them when they do arise.
